Plant petunias and question everything – chriscondello I have no idea where I got this plant from… A division from another gardener probably… It begins blooming in mid-spring and will keep on going right up through autumn… The seeds are born in a pointed pod… They turn black while the pod is still green… Each one has a white tail that is enjoyed by ants…įringed bleeding hearts are tolerant of a variety of conditions… I consider them full shade plants… They can be grown in the sun but tend to stop blooming early… I believe this is a result of stress caused by the excessive sunlight… I personally call this plant “Creeping Bleeding Heart”… Dicentra eximia is a herbaceous perennial that grows from a rhizome… It is known by the common names “Wild Bleeding Heart”, “Fringed Bleeding Heart”, and “Turkey-Corn”… It is native to the Appalachian Mountains from Pennsylvania south… “A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…įor the next 7 days I plan to step outside of my garden and share some of the wildflowers I draw inspiration from in the early spring… Although this article is in my garden… Fringed Bleeding Heart is a native in my region… Therefore I am including it in my wildflower week… I actually have one more Dicentra for you tomorrow… But until then… “Fringed Bleeding Heart” – Spring 2013 – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA
